A Little Mistake That Costs A Family $$$$$$

Did anyone notice why I put six $ in the title? Well everyday risk and exposures are flowing all around us. Those days when you LEAST expect it tragedies occur. Sometimes those tragedies have consequences with HIGH price tags. Read below and find out what I mean.

IIABA Fall 2009 edition

Titled: Real Life Tragedies

  • In Louisiana, an insured's teenage son was driving his younger sister and her friend to the movies. He lost control of the vehicle, left the road and hit a telephone pole. The friend permanently los the use of her right arm and suffered severe brain injuries resulting in a permanent brain damage. The claim was settled for $1,350,000.
  • A 41-year-old periodontist suffered injuries to his face and fingers following a head-on automobile accident. A California jury assessed the defendant damages of $576,000.
  • Two friends were on a hunting trip in the Connecticut woods when the defendant's gun accidentally discharged. The victim was struck in the eye by a pellet. In an out-of-court settlement, the defendant agreed to pay dames of $192,000.

Sadly, tragedies happen every day and no one can predict if they may be involved in one or even the accidental cause of one. But everyone can prepare for that eventuality by making sure they are protected from potential liability by having a personal umbrella policy.

No Insurance Bail Out!!

Will one major catastrophe harm your business? How insurance won’t bail you out?

The ongoing struggles in our economic hardships -- legalized by the man in the ivory tower then coupled by the fear of loss -- has prompted some intriguing new questions.

If time equals money, Can anyone prove, after one catastrophe loss ie. fire, hurricane, or flood how insurance is going to pay for loss of time? What's “catastrophe” and what would be that insurance pays for?

I recently brought these questions up during a meeting on a Commercial Property Policy. The answer was simple the owner said, “Business Income and Extra Expense.” “Ah yes” I replied. “So show me your catastrophe plan that pin points your exact executive procedure that won’t burn Precious time of customers, and employees.” The owner replied, “I don’t have one. Won’t insurance solve everything?”

There it is, the “won’t.” How “won’t” insurance pay for loss of time? Commercial Property Insurance will pay for rebuilding the structure, business contents, business income and extra expense. The rescue that insurance won’t pay for is the time it takes to rebuild. If you have a deductible of 24, 48, or 72 hrs before Business Income and Extra Expense kicks in, what about your customers and employees? Are you going to keep paying employees if you have no building to work in? How are you going to provide customer service in this critical time frame? What is it about your business that has made success that takes time to replicate? Sure, Insurance will reimburse you for your payroll, the expense for renting a new building, and setting up a phone system. How long will that take? The small window of opportunity for your competition to step in has just arrived.

The idea of buying insurance is not shared by everyone these days. By having a procedural plan in place with the help of a Commercial Insurance Agent to help you can save time. But if Time is Money, how much money you are willing to spend in a catastrophe to replicate your success?

The Lazy

In the world of business there is a lot of laziness. I am not talking about couch potato lazy but rather going to work and not working, going through the motions, or spacing out. This kind of practice takes time to develop. You sit at your desk, you surf the internet, check your social sites, catch the updated news on your team there is a certain form of art that can be composed from this practice. After a while a routine develops that is the kind of art in business gets you one thing, FIRED!!! In football there is a great safety net that points laziness out and keeping you in check. We call it "Check the Tape." You space out or go through the motions in practice its all on TAPE! THE CAMERA IN THE SKY NEVER LIES! Coaches dedicate hours and hours to watching film. They are looking for the flaws, the cracks, the LAZY. A Coach who can execute and correct against those flaws are called a "FOOTBALL GENIUS!"
In business, your employer will not have a camera watching your every move in the office. Your employer probably does not have millions to invest in you So you are your own enforcer. You have catch your lazy routine. Maybe you should video tape yourself for a day and see how much time is wasted on spacing out, going through the motion or not working. Even I am not immune to being lazy but sometimes you just have to stop review the tape and correct yourself.
